Escape from America

Back when we were dreaming of quitting work and considering where we would like to relocate, I ran across an on-line magazine called "Escape from America". It fueled our fantasies with stories from around the world about breaking free from America's hold on us and discovering new possibilities elsewhere. One of the early articles that caught our attention was one on living on $800 a month on Margarita Island, Venezuela. It so captivated us that we made our first exploratory trip there and became convinced of the reasonableness of our escape. Soon after we "tasted" Mérida, then Playa del Carmen and then San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato. And the rest, as they say, is history. You can link to that regular publication here. I have also decided to include this link in my "Helpful Links" section in the left column of this blog as it may interest some of you.

Some of the articles are quite good. In this issue, I like the one on living on $500 a month in Asia. They frequently have some interesting properties listed for sale around the world. You can "subscribe" for free to this publication and receive updates to your email when new issues are available.

Now that I am committed to Mérida and am in a monogamous relationship with her, I don't study these articles as religiously as I once did. But periodically I check out the issues and discover items of interest. I think you will, too.

Flirting with other places is still kind of fun.

Paul....I have found your blog just recently and have read it all. Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comments on aging (I am 59 tomorrow and having a bit of a struggle with being a 35 year old trapped in this old lady's body)...risk taking, and especially on simple living. I am trying to work up the courage to take a year out of my life and go back to Mexico and travel around. I have a small pension ($l200.Canadian) a month and a would be so happy to rent out a small room with a seperate bathroom somewhere. I do love Quintana Roo and have lived in Tzucacab in the Yucatan as well. I lived with a Mexican national for 18 years both of us travelling back and forth until he got his Landed Immigrant Status. Sadly, the relationship came apart. I have been back in Canada for six years. We have managed to salvage a friendship after healing from our pain but the damage has been too severe to consider reconcilliation. However, truly I love Mexico, it's treasure (the people) and I long to return. I love how you speak and feel about La Dulce - how wise and fortunate you both are to be caring so carefully for your precious relationship. It is indeed a wonder to have that gift. I hope someday I will meet someone whom I can learn to trust again. Anyways, I have blabbed enough...again, thank you for the sharing and for making me feel it is possible.
